Lesson

Putting -러 [reo] after a verb explains the reason for going or coming somewhere.

  • λ¨Ήλ‹€ [meok-da] to eat β†’ 먹으러 [meo-geu-reo] in order to eat
  • λ§ˆμ‹œλ‹€ [ma-si-da] to drink β†’ λ§ˆμ‹œλŸ¬ [ma-si-reo] in order to drink
  • 읽닀 [ilk-da] to read β†’ 읽으러 [il-geu-reo] in order to read
  • κ³΅λΆ€ν•˜λ‹€ [gong-bu-ha-da] to study β†’ κ³΅λΆ€ν•˜λŸ¬ [gong-bu-ha-reo] in order to study

When the verb stem ends in a CONSONANT sound, we use -으러 [eu-reo]

  • 아침을 λ¨Ή- [a-chim-eul meok-]
  • 사진을 찍- [sa-jin-eul jjik-]

When the verb stem ends in a VOWEL sound, we use -러 [reo]

  • 여행을 κ°€- [yeo-haeng-eul ga-]
  • 선물을 μ£Ό- [seon-mu-reul ju-]

μ™œ 학ꡐ에 κ°€μš”? [wae hak-gyo-e ga-yo?]
Why are you going to school?

  • μ™œ [wae] means "why"
  • 학ꡐ에 κ°€μš”? [hak-gyo-e ga-yo?] means "Do you go to school?"
  • Literally means "why, Do you go to school?"

κ³΅λΆ€ν•˜λŸ¬ 학ꡐ에 κ°€μš”. [gong-bu-ha-reo hak-gyo-e ga-yo]
I'm going to school to study.

  • κ³΅λΆ€ν•˜λŸ¬ [gong-bu-ha-reo] means "In order to study"
  • 학ꡐ에 κ°€μš” [hak-gyo-e ga-yo] means "I go to school"
  • Literally means "In order to study, I go to school"

책을 읽으러 λ„μ„œκ΄€μ— κ°€μš”. [chae-geul il-geu-reo do-seo-gwan-e ga-yo]
I'm going to the library to read a book.

  • 책을 읽으러 [chae-geul il-geu-reo] means "in order to read a book"
  • λ„μ„œκ΄€μ— κ°€μš” [do-seo-gwan-e ga-yo] means "I go to the library"

We can use purpose ending -러 only with verbs of motion like 'μ˜€λ‹€' [o-da] come / 'κ°€λ‹€' [ga-da] go

  • 아침을 먹으러 κ°”μ–΄μš”. [a-chim-eul meo-geu-reo ga-sseo-yo] I went to have breakfast.
  • 선물을 주러 μ™”μ–΄μš”. [seon-mu-reul ju-reo wa-sseo-yo] I came to give a gift.

Conversation

  • A: 였늘 어디에 κ°€μš”?
    Where are you going today?
  • B: μΉ΄νŽ˜μ— κ°€μš”. [ka-pe-e ga-yo]
    I'm going to the cafe.
  • A: μ™œ μΉ΄νŽ˜μ— κ°€μš”?
    Why are you going to the cafe?
  • B: κ³΅λΆ€ν•˜λŸ¬ μΉ΄νŽ˜μ— κ°€μš”. [gong-bu-ha-reo ka-pe-e ga-yo]
    I'm going to the cafe to study.
  • A: 내일 어디에 κ°€μš”?
    Where are you going tomorrow?
  • B: μ‡Όν•‘ν•˜λŸ¬ 백화점에 κ°€μš”. [syo-ping-ha-reo bae-kwa-jeom-e ga-yo]
    I'm going to the department store to go shopping.
  • A: 같이 κ°€μš”!
