Every verb has a plain form ending in an 'u' sound. Every verb also has a polite form ending in -γΎγ
- θ‘γ [iku] β θ‘γγΎγ [ikimasu] I go.
- ι£γΉγ [taberu] β ι£γΉγΎγ [tabemasu] I eat.
Group 1 Verbs typically end in a consonant sound plus 'u' Ex) θ‘γ [iku]
To convert a group 1 verb in the polite form,
- Step 1: take off the '-u' at the end Ex) θ‘γ [iku] β [ik]
- Step 2: add an 'i' sound Ex) [ik] β θ‘γ [iki]
- Step 3: add the polite ending -γΎγ Ex) θ‘γ [iki] β θ‘γγΎγ [ikimasu]
ιγ³γΎγ [asobimasu]
I play.
- Step 1: ιγΆ [asobu] β [asob]
- Step 2: [asob] β ιγ³ [asobi]
- Step 3: ιγ³ [asobi] β ιγ³γΎγ [asobimasu]
Exception for Group 1 verb (these verbs are not consonant sound plus 'u')
- δΌγ [au] means 'to meet'
- θ¨γ [iu] means 'to say'
