How to have an adjective right in front of the noun
Step 1: Drop the 다 [da]. 크다 [keu-da] big → 크 [keu]
Step 2: Add -은 [eun] / -ㄴ [n]. 크 [keu] → 큰 [keun]
When the adjective stem ends in a CONSONANT sound,
we use -은 [eun]
- 작- [jak-]
When the adjective stem ends in a VOWEL sound,
we use -ㄴ [n]
- 크- [keu-]
- 예쁘- [ye-ppeu-]
큰 가방이에요. [keun ga-bang-i-e-yo]
It's a big bag.
- 큰 [keun] means "big.."
- 가방이에요 [ga-bang-i-e-yo] means "It's a bag."
- Literally means "big.., it's a bag"
오늘 작은 가방을 살 거예요. [o-neul ja-geun ga-bang-eul sal geo-ye-yo]
I'm going to buy a small bag today.
- 오늘 [o-neul] means "today"
- 작은 가방 [ja-geun ga-bang] means "small bag"
- 살 거예요 [sal geo-ye-yo] means "I will buy it."
- Literally means "today, small bag, I will buy it"
오늘 큰 모자를 살 거예요. [o-neul keun mo-ja-reul sal geo-ye-yo]
I'm going to buy a big hat today.
- 큰 모자 [keun mo-ja] means "big hat"
- Literally means "today, big hat, I will buy it"
크고 예쁜 가방 [keu-go ye-ppeun ga-bang]
big and pretty bag
- 크고 [keu-go] means "big and.."
- 예쁜 가방 [ye-ppeun ga-bang] means "pretty bag"
Conversation
- A: 오늘 뭐 살 거예요?
What are you going to buy today? - B: 오늘 작은 가방을 살 거예요. [o-neul ja-geun ga-bang-eul sal geo-ye-yo]
I'm going to buy a small bag today. - A: 아하.
I see. - B: 오늘 뭐 살 거예요? [o-neul mwo sal geo-ye-yo?]
What are you going to buy today? - A: 오늘 큰 모자를 살 거예요.
I'm going to buy a big hat today.
