Lesson

To negate a verb put [an] before the verb.

영화를 봐요. [yeong-hwa-reul bwa-yo]
I watch a movie.

영화를 봐요. [yeong-hwa-reul an bwa-yo]
I don't watch movies.


아침을 먹어요. [a-chim-eul meo-geo-yo]
I eat breakfast.

아침을 먹어요. [a-chim-eul an meo-geo-yo]
I don't eat breakfast.

안 봤어요. [an bwa-sseo-yo]
I didn't see it.

  • [an] means "not"
  • 봤어요 [bwa-sseo-yo] means "I saw."
  • Literally means "Not, I saw"

커피를 안 마셔요? [keo-pi-reul an ma-syeo-yo?]
Do you not drink coffee?

  • 커피 [keo-pi] means "coffee"
  • [reul] is a particle that marks a subject
  • [an] means "not"
  • 마셔요? [ma-syeo-yo?] means "do you drink (it)?"
  • Literally means "coffee, not, do you drink?"

No, I didn't eat.
