Asking About the Past

Lesson
To negate a verb put 안 [an] before the verb.
영화를 봐요. [yeong-hwa-reul bwa-yo]
I watch a movie.
↓
영화를 안 봐요. [yeong-hwa-reul an bwa-yo]
I don't watch movies.
아침을 먹어요. [a-chim-eul meo-geo-yo]
I eat breakfast.
↓
아침을 안 먹어요. [a-chim-eul an meo-geo-yo]
I don't eat breakfast.
안 봤어요. [an bwa-sseo-yo]
I didn't see it.
- 안 [an] means "not"
- 봤어요 [bwa-sseo-yo] means "I saw."
- Literally means "Not, I saw"
커피를 안 마셔요? [keo-pi-reul an ma-syeo-yo?]
Do you not drink coffee?
- 커피 [keo-pi] means "coffee"
- 를 [reul] is a particle that marks a subject
- 안 [an] means "not"
- 마셔요? [ma-syeo-yo?] means "do you drink (it)?"
- Literally means "coffee, not, do you drink?"
아니요, 안 먹었어요. [a-ni-yo, an meo-geo-sseo-yo]
No, I didn't eat.
- 아니요 [a-ni-yo] means "no"
