Talking About the Weather

Lesson
Use -ㄹ 것 같아요 [(ㄹ) geot gat-a-yo] when you feel fairly sure about what's going to happen.
Comparing definite vs probable future:
- 볼 거예요. [bol geo-ye-yo] "I will watch it."
- 볼 것 같아요. [bol geot gat-a-yo] "I think I will watch it."
- 공부할 거예요. [gong-bu-hal geo-ye-yo] "I will study it."
- 공부할 것 같아요. [gong-bu-hal geot gat-a-yo] "I think I will study it."
흐릴 것 같아요. [heu-ril geot gat-a-yo]
I think it'll be cloudy.
- 흐릴 것 [heu-ril geot] means "the fact that it will be cloudy"
- 같아요 [gat-a-yo] means "be similar to"
비가 올 것 같아요. [bi-ga ol geot gat-a-yo]
I think it'll rain.
- 비가 [bi-ga] means "rain"
- 올 것 같아요 [ol geot gat-a-yo] means "I think it will come"
눈이 올 것 같아요. [nun-i ol geot gat-a-yo]
I think it'll snow.
- 눈이 [nun-i] means "snow"
바람이 불 것 같아요. [ba-ram-i bul geot gat-a-yo]
I think it'll be windy.
- 바람이 [ba-ram-i] means "wind"
Conversation
- A: 날씨가 많이 흐려요.
The weather is very cloudy. - B: 비가 올 것 같아요. [bi-ga ol geot gat-a-yo]
I think it'll rain. - A: 그러게요.
I agree. - A: 비가 올 것 같으니 우산을 챙기는 게 좋을 것 같아요.
Since it looks like it might rain, I think it would be a good idea to bring an umbrella.
- A: 날씨가 춥네요.
The weather is cold. - B: 눈이 올 것 같아요. [nun-i ol geot gat-a-yo]
I think it'll snow. - A: 첫눈이겠네요!
It must be the first snowfall!
