Lesson

To say you aren't able to do an action, put 못 [mot] before the verb.

  • 영화를 봐요. [yeong-hwa-reul bwa-yo] I watch a movie. → 영화를 못 봐요. [yeong-hwa-reul mot bwa-yo] I can't watch movies.
  • 아침을 먹어요. [a-chim-eul meo-geo-yo] I eat breakfast. → 아침을 못 먹어요. [a-chim-eul mot meo-geo-yo] I can't eat breakfast.

우유를 못 마셔요. [u-yu-reul mot ma-syeo-yo]
I can't drink milk.

  • 우유 [u-yu] means "milk"
  • [mot] means "can't"
  • 마셔요 [ma-syeo-yo] means "I drink."

중국어를 못 해요. [jung-gu-geo-reul mot hae-yo]
I can't speak Chinese.

  • 중국어 [jung-gu-geo] means "Chinese"
  • [mot] means "can't"
  • 해요 [hae-yo] means "I do it."
  • In English we say that we 'speak' a language, but in Korean we just 'do' a language.

Conversation

  • A: 뭐를 못 먹어요?
    What can't you eat?
  • B: 고기를 못 먹어요. [go-gi-reul mot meo-geo-yo]
    I can't eat meat.
  • A: 뭐를 못 해요?
    What can't you do?
  • B: 수영을 못 해요. [su-yeong-eul mot hae-yo]
    I can't swim.
  • A: 저도요.
    Me too.
