Lesson
Changing the intonation makes the -세요 [se-yo] sentence into a question.
- 공부하세요. [gong-bu-ha-se-yo] Please study.
- 공부하세요? [gong-bu-ha-se-yo?] Are you studying?
Forming a polite past tense question
Step 1: Drop the 세요? [se-yo?]. 읽으세요? [il-geu-se-yo?] Are you reading? → 읽으 [il-geu]
Step 2: Add -셨어요? [syeo-sseo-yo?]. 읽으 [il-geu] → 읽으셨어요? [il-geu-syeo-sseo-yo?]
공부하셨어요? [gong-bu-ha-syeo-sseo-yo?]
Did you study?
- Step 1: 공부하세요? [gong-bu-ha-se-yo?] Are you studying? → 공부하 [gong-bu-ha]
- Step 2: 공부하 [gong-bu-ha] → 공부하셨어요? [gong-bu-ha-syeo-sseo-yo?]
뭐 하셨어요? [mwo ha-syeo-sseo-yo?]
What did you do?
- 뭐 [mwo] means "what"
- 하셨어요? [ha-syeo-sseo-yo?] means "Did you do it?"
뭐 드셨어요? [mwo deu-syeo-sseo-yo?]
What did you eat?
- Honorific form of 먹다 [meok-da] is 드시다 [deu-si-da] 'to eat'
- 드세요 [deu-se-yo] means "Please eat."
잘 지내셨어요? [jal ji-nae-syeo-sseo-yo?]
How have you been?
- Step 1: 잘 지내세요? [jal ji-nae-se-yo?] Are you doing all right? → 잘 지내 [jal ji-nae]
- Step 2: 잘 지내 [jal ji-nae] → 잘 지내셨어요? [jal ji-nae-syeo-sseo-yo?]
주무셨어요? [ju-mu-syeo-sseo-yo?]
Did you sleep well?
- Honorific form of 자다 [ja-da] is 주무시다 [ju-mu-si-da] 'to sleep'
- 주무세요 [ju-mu-se-yo] means "Please sleep."
