How to say the things we have to do.
Step 1: Drop the 요 [yo]. 가요 [ga-yo] I go → 가 [ga]
Step 2: Add -야 돼요 [ya dwae-yo]. 가 [ga] → 가야 돼요 [ga-ya dwae-yo] I have to go.
돼요 [dwae-yo] and 해요 [hae-yo] are interchangeable.
학교에 가야 돼요. [hak-gyo-e ga-ya dwae-yo]
I have to go to school.
- 학교 [hak-gyo] means "school"
- 가야 돼요 [ga-ya dwae-yo] means "I have to go"
밥을 먹어야 돼요. [ba-beul meo-geo-ya dwae-yo]
I have to eat a meal.
- 밥 [bab] means "meal"
- 먹어야 돼요 [meo-geo-ya dwae-yo] means "I have to eat"
뭐 해야 돼요? [mwo hae-ya dwae-yo?]
What do you have to do?
- 뭐 해요? [mwo hae-yo] means "What do you do?"
- 뭐 해야 돼요? [mwo hae-ya dwae-yo?] means "What do you have to do?"
Conversation
- A: 오전에 뭐 해야 돼요?
What do you have to do during the morning? - B: 축구를 해야 돼요. [chuk-gu-reul hae-ya dwae-yo]
I have to play soccer. - A: 오후에는 뭐 해야 돼요?
What do you have to do during the afternoon? - B: 학교에 가야 돼요. [hak-gyo-e ga-ya dwae-yo]
I have to go to school. - A: 저녁에는 뭐 해야 돼요?
What do you have to do during the evening? - B: 밥을 먹어야 돼요. [ba-beul meo-geo-ya dwae-yo]
I have to eat a meal.
