Talking About the Scheduled Time

何時ですか [nan ji desu ka]
What time is it?
- 何時 [nan ji] means "how many hours"
- ですか [desu ka] means "is it?"
- Literally means "how many hours, is it?"
The counter for hours is 時 [ji] and the counter for minutes is 分 [fun].
Mostly use Chinese number for telling time.
3時です [san ji desu]
It's 3 o'clock.
- 3時 [san ji] means "3 o'clock"
- です [desu] means "it is"
3時29分です [san ji ni jū kyū fun desu]
It's 3:29.
- 3時 [san ji] means "3 o'clock"
- 29分 [ni jū kyū fun] means "29 minutes"
For some minutes the counter ふん [fun] becomes ぷん [pun]
- いっぷん [i ppun] one minute
- さんぷん [san pun] three minutes
- よんぷん [yon pun] four minutes
- ろっぷん [rok pun] six minutes
- はっぷん [hap pun] or はちふん [hachi fun] eight minutes
Two of the minutes use native Japanese numbers rather than Chinese numbers.
- よんぷん [yon pun] four minutes
- ななふん [nana fun] seven minutes
Conversation
- A: 何時ですか
What time is it? - B: 6時15分です [roku ji jū go fun desu]
It's 6:15. - A: 何時ですか
What time is it? - B: 7時30分です [shichi ji san jū fun desu]
It's 7:30.
