[ni] is a particle that means 'in', 'at', 'on', or 'during'

どこに行きますか [doko ni ikimasu ka]
Where are you going?

  • どこ [doko] means "Where"
  • [ni] particle that marks the destination
  • 行きますか [ikimasu ka] means "Do you go?"
  • Literally means "Where, do you go?"

To answer this question, location words + に行きます [ni ikimasu]

  • カフェに行きます [kafye ni ikimasu] I'm going to the cafe.
  • 映画館に行きます [eigakan ni ikimasu] I'm going to the library.
  • 公園に行きます [kōen ni ikimasu] I'm going to the park.

To say the direction we're heading in, we use the direction particle -へ [e].

どこへ行きますか [doko e ikimasu ka]
Where are you headed?

  • [e] marks the direction we're heading in
  • Literally means "Where, do you go?"

To answer this question, location words + へ行きます [e ikimasu]

  • カフェへ行きます [kafye e ikimasu] I'm headed to the cafe.
  • 映画館へ行きます [eigakan e ikimasu] I'm headed to the library.
  • 公園へ行きます [kōen e ikimasu] I'm headed to the park.

Conversation

  • A: 昼、どこに行きますか
    What are you going during the day?
  • B: 図書館に行きます [toshokan ni ikimasu]
    I'm going to the library.
  • B: どこに行きますか [doko ni ikimasu ka]
    Where are you going?
  • A: デパートに行きます
    I'm going to the department store.
