Talking About What You Are Doing

How to form actions in progress forms:
- Step 1: Have the verb in its て form.
- Step 2: Add います [imasu].
聴いています [kiiteimasu]
I'm listening.
-て [te] form of Group 1 verb whose root ends in 'ku':
- Example: 聴く [kiku]
- Step 1. Make it the polite form
- Step 2. Drop the -ます [masu]
- Step 3. Drop the k sound before 'i'
- Step 4. Attach て [te]
コーヒーを飲んでいます [kōhī o nondeimasu]
I'm drinking coffee.
-て [te] form of Group 1 verb ends with 'nu', 'mu', or 'bu':
- Example: 飲む [nomu]
- Step 1. Drop the last syllable
- Step 2. Attach -んで [nde]
行っています [itteimasu]
I'm going.
Group 1 verb whose last sound before the '-u' is a vowel (行く applies the same):
- Example: 行く [iku]
- Step 1. Drop the last syllable
- Step 2. Attach って [tte]
Conversation
- A: 今、何をしていますか
What are you doing now? - B: コーヒーを飲んでいます [kōhī o nondeimasu]
I'm drinking coffee. - A: いいですね!
That sounds nice! - A: 今、何を聴いていますか [ima, nani o kiiteimasu ka]
What are you listening to right now? - B: 音楽を聴いています
I'm listening to music.
