Group 1 has several rules to making the verbs their て [te] form.

Group 1 verb whose root ends in 'ku':
Example: 書く [kaku] / 働く [hataraku] / 聞く [kiku]

  • Step 1. Make it the polite form
  • Step 2. Drop the -ます [masu]
  • Step 3. Drop the k sound before 'i'
  • Step 4. Attach て [te]
  • 書く [kaku] → 書きます [kakimasu] → 書き [kaki] → 書い [kai] → 書いて [kaite]

Group 1 verb ends with 'nu', 'mu', or 'bu':
Example: 読む [yomu] / 遊ぶ [asobu] / 飲む [nomu]

  • Step 1. Drop the last syllable
  • Step 2. Attach -んで [nde]
  • 読む [yomu] → 読 [yo] → 読んで [yonde]

Group 1 verb whose last sound before the '-u' is a vowel:
Example: 会う [au] / 言う [iu] / 行く [iku]

  • Step 1. Drop the last syllable
  • Step 2. Attach って [tte]
  • 会う [au] → 会 [a] → 会って [atte]
  • Note: 行く [iku] applies the same rule

聞いてください [kiite kudasai]
Please listen.

  • 聞いて [kiite] is the て [te] form for "listen"
  • ください [kudasai] means "please"

読んでください [yonde kudasai]
Please read.

  • 読んで [yonde] is the て [te] form for "read"

手伝ってください [tetsudatte kudasai]
Please help.

  • 手伝って [tetsudatte] is the て [te] form for "help"

Conversation

  • A: どうしたんですか
    What's the matter?
  • B: 手伝ってください [tetsudatte kudasai]
    Please help me.
  • A: 何ですか
    What is it?
  • B: 読んでください [yonde kudasai]
    Please read it.
  • A: はい、見せてください
    Sure, please show it to me.
